Business optimism on the riseTrading conditions are set to improve across the UK in the second half of the year, according to the latest Regional Economic Trends survey from the Confederation of British Industry. The survey of 4,000 firms revealed that business optimism was high across all regions of the UK, with firms in London proving the most positive. However, while domestic orders continued to rise in all areas, export orders were more subdued. Douglas Godden, CBI head of economic analysis, said, ‘the only fly in the ointment is the subdued growth in export demand which is clearly holding back some regions’. The CBI suggested that exporters are being held back by the strength of sterling. The recent SME trends survey from the CBI revealed that small manufacturers have witnessed the first increase in orders for more than three years, and that confidence among SMEs has risen at the strongest rate since April 2002. |
