Business 'could save £3bn' by reducing wasteUK firms are wasting £3bn each year by generating unnecessary waste, according to the Government-backed Envirowise group. Recent figures from Envirowise show that the amount of water wasted by companies would fill 1.5 million Olympic swimming pools, and the amount of excess packaging would fill 22,000 jumbo jets. Such high levels of wastage have an impact not only on the environment, but also on profitability. Envirowise director, Dr Martin Gibson, said, 'Instead of throwing money down the drain, businesses could build brighter futures, with savings realised through better environmental practices reinvested in staff and product development'. Envirowise has provided a checklist for businesses on how to reduce waste, while also saving money. Suggested measures include: - Measuring and monitoring the amount of water used, and comparing this against production output and staff numbers - Reassessing product design processes, in order to create products which require less materials or use less energy during the manufacturing process, and which are easier to reuse and recycle.
