Employers' views sought on new racial equality codeThe Commission for Racial Equality is seeking employers’ views on its revised statutory Code of Practice on Racial Equality in Employment. The code has been revised to reflect key legislative changes which have taken place since it was first introduced, 20 years ago. The new draft code aims to provide employers, recruitment agencies, trades unions and employees with practical guidance on meeting their obligations under the Race Relations Act. The statutory status of the code means that it can be used in an employment tribunal. Some business groups have criticised the updated rules, which they say SMEs could find difficult to comply with, due to a lack of resources. Sheila Rogers, director of strategy and delivery at the CRE, said, ‘The CRE is not in the business of placing extra burdens on organisations’. ‘Our web-based consultation provides an excellent opportunity for both organisations and individuals to shape a key document affecting race equality in employment’, she added. For further information on the code, and to download the feedback questionnaire, visit the Commission for Racial Equality website (www.cre.gov.uk). The deadline for feedback is Friday 6 August 2004. |
