Mixed Response to new M6 Toll ProposalThe Government’s plan to build a new private toll motorway alongside the M6 has produced a mixed response. Motoring organisation the RAC has broadly welcomed the proposed 50-mile ‘Expressway’ that will run between Birmingham and Manchester, but environmentalists have expressed concern about the potential effects on the countryside, and the lack of similar investment in public transport. The new highway would be twice as long as the current M6 toll and would have two lanes in each direction. Construction would take more than ten years. Transport Secretary Alister Darling argues that the new road would "double the capacity" of the M6 at a much lower cost than widening the existing motorway. Consultation on the proposal continues until September. |
