New telemarketing regulations come into forceThe new regulations on 'cold calling' have now come into force. Under the new rules, UK firms can choose to block direct marketing calls by registering their numbers with the Telephone Preference Service. The TPS register has until now only been available to residential customers or sole traders and unincorporated partnerships. Anyone making unsolicited promotional and/or fundraising calls to any business must now check all numbers against the TPS list, and failure to do so will carry fines of up to £5,000. Businesses and organisations must also ensure that they do not call corporate subscribers who have notified them that unsolicited calls are unwelcome. The Information Commissioner has issued a free guide to the regulations, which includes information about what constitutes a telemarketing call, and an explanation of the obligations for businesses. For further information, visit the Information Commissioner's Office website (www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk). |
