Red tape 'still tying down UK firms'

Excessive red tape is continuing to restrict UK businesses, according to a survey carried out by the Institute of Directors (IoD).

Unnecessary regulations and 'misplaced assistance' are responsible for holding back business expansion and job creation, the IoD says.

A series of case studies of UK businesses revealed a number of problems caused by regulations from central government, the European Commission and local government, covering such areas as employment law, planning, and health and safety.

The report also highlighted the difficulties imposed on employers by new family-friendly policies.

James Walsh, IoD head of regulatory affairs, said, 'Employment regulations crop up time and again in this red tape dossier. The Government should consider giving business a time-out until at least 2010 before it presses ahead with further extensions of employee rights on issues such as flexible working, maternity pay and parental leave'.
