Spending Review: The Political ResponseConservative shadow chancellor Oliver Letwin dismissed Gordon Brown’s Spending Review as "a manifesto for fat government and fake savings". Far from saving money, the review meant that there would be "more bureaucracy, more targets, more initiatives…more regulation, more borrowing and more taxes", he argued. The Liberal Democrats took a different line, claiming that the ‘battle’ between Labour and the Tories to cull civil service jobs could damage public services. Vincent Cable, the party’s Treasury spokesman, attacked the "mock battle between the Conservatives’ slash and burn and the chancellor’s somewhat more cautious trim and singe approach to public spending." |
