TUC attacks Government’s manufacturing record

UK industry is in ‘dramatic decline’, according to a report by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

The report claims that some 750,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost since Labour came to power, and that the British Government gives less support to industry than any other country in Europe.

The TUC urges the Government to do more to promote workers' rights and business investment, pointing to the fact that governments in France, Germany, Italy and Spain all give more than double in state aid to industry than the UK.

However, the Department of Trade and Industry has hit back at the claims, arguing that manufacturing productivity had improved by over 22% since 1997.
