Self assessment process comes under scrutinyThe National Audit Office (NAO) has embarked on an inquiry into the self assessment tax return process, which will investigate the reasons behind instances of late and inaccurate filing. As many as 10% of tax forms are filed beyond the due date, while around one third contain inaccurate information. The NAO are examining the Inland Revenue's practices and performance in relation to receiving returns, and will be investigating the process from the taxpayer's perspective, in order to establish ways in which the filing process could be made less complex. The results are expected to be published by spring 2005. |
