Staff "threatening IT security"

Members of staff are posing a major threat to IT security at many small and medium-sized businesses, according to a recent report.

Around 50% of companies reported that they had suffered from virus attacks, with 50% of these blaming the influx of viruses on employees who were downloading inappropriate items, opening unsecure emails, and even deactivating security software.

The following measures could help you to reduce the security risk:

  • Keep firewall and anti-virus software up to date.
  • Establish an IT security policy, and enforce it.
  • Educate staff about IT security measures, such as not opening emails and attachments from unrecognised sources.
  • Ask your staff to keep non-work related emails to a minimum.
