New council will promote graduate enterprise

The Government has launched a new national organisation which will focus on promoting graduate enterprise.

The National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship (NCGE) will work to encourage graduates to consider starting up a business when they have completed their time at university.

Currently 7% of UK graduates start their own businesses, compared with 18% in the US.

Launching the council, Chancellor Gordon Brown said, 'It's a huge gap in achievement which explains why we have lower productivity, fewer businesses, fewer science-based businesses and lower economic growth'.

The NCGE has been granted £400,000 by the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department for Education and Skills.

It will work in conjunction with other organisations, including universities, to help promote a culture of enterprise, as well as providing guidance in such areas as writing a business plan.
