Government rejects calls for compulsory retirement ban

Business groups have welcomed the news that employers will reserve the right to compel workers to retire at the age of 65.

The Government rejected calls to ban compulsory retirement entirely, when new European age discrimination legislation comes into force in 2006.

However, the news does mean that for some employers who currently set their own limits, the default retirement age will actually increase.

Workers will also be allowed the right to request a later retirement, and employers who do not grant the request will need to be able to justify their decision on business grounds.

Campaign groups have expressed their concern that the lack of a ban on compulsory retirement will lead to continued discrimination against older workers.

Gordon Lishman of Age Concern said that a delay would signal that 'this Government is not committed to creating better opportunities for older people at work'.
