Business reacts to workplace smoking ban proposalsHealth Secretary John Reid has unveiled the Government's plans for controlling smoking in public places. The proposals form part of a white paper which seeks to tackle a number of public health issues including obesity and drinking. The plans include a ban on smoking in all pubs and restaurants in which food is prepared, along with other enclosed public places such as offices and factories. The Government has been placed under increasing pressure to introduce a public smoking ban following Ireland's introduction of a ban earlier this year. Recently the Scottish Executive announced that it would also be introducing such a ban. The British Medical Assocation has also renewed its call to ban smoking, and published a report highlighting the negative effects of passive smoking. Business leaders have given a mixed reaction to the Government's proposals, with some experts predicting that the smoking ban will have an adverse effect on the hospitality sector, and will lead to job losses. However, others believe that the measures could boost visits to pubs and restaurants. |
